To Multitask or Not to Multitask…

If you look at the expectations of modern society, in many cases multitasking is considered an admirable, if not a vital, quality in a person. But unfortunately those who support that idea likely haven’t read the latest research

For those of you who have been trying to ‘do it all’, I’ve got some good news – not only don’t you have to do that, you actually shouldn’t do that! Phew!!

Much of the recent brain research suggests that our brains function best in a linear manner, meaning that we work best when we do one thing at a time. Now that doesn’t mean that if you’re doing the laundry that you have to sit and wait for the washing machine to be finished before you can leave the room. (Too bad, eh? ;) )

What it does mean is that if you really want to remember something or you want to perform well you really shouldn’t be talking on the phone, sending your friend a text message, checking your email, listening to your iPod and having a snack all while you’re working on your studies. Focus on doing one thing at a time and you’ll find each activity more beneficial and enjoyable.

If you’re still not sure what I mean, try the game below. It’s all about multitasking by playing several games at once. Not only is it difficult, if someone were to ask you even a very simple question while you were playing I’ll bet you’d have a hard time responding appropriately, and then later on even remembering what they asked!

Test it for yourself…
